What is orthopaedic physiotherapy?

Orthopaedic physiotherapy treats conditions affecting muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and bones. It covers injury recovery, arthritis and spinal conditions, and structured rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery — restoring range of movement, strength and function while reducing the risk of the problem returning.

What we treat

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation — joint replacement, ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, spinal surgery, fracture fixation
  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain
  • Spinal conditions including disc problems and facet joint pain
  • Tendinopathies and fracture rehabilitation
  • Postural and biomechanical problems
  • Work-related musculoskeletal pain

Post-surgical rehabilitation

Surgery repairs a structure. It does not restore function — rehabilitation does. Strength, range of motion, control and confidence all have to be rebuilt deliberately, and the quality of that rehabilitation has a large bearing on the final outcome. We work to your surgeon’s protocol where one has been provided, and will liaise with your surgical team where that helps. Bring your operation notes and any post-operative instructions to your first appointment.

What treatment may include

  • Manual therapy including joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques
  • Progressive exercise prescription with clear, staged progression
  • Range-of-motion and scar management after surgery
  • Gait retraining and load management education
  • Dry needling where clinically appropriate
  • Home exercise programmes

Frequently asked questions

Can physiotherapy help after surgery?

Yes. Post-operative physiotherapy is a standard and important part of recovery from most orthopaedic procedures. It restores movement and strength, manages swelling and scar tissue, and guides safe progression back to normal activity within your surgeon’s restrictions.

When should I start rehabilitation after surgery?

This is determined by your surgeon and the procedure. Some protocols start within days; others require a period of protection first. Follow your surgical team’s instructions, and bring them to your first physiotherapy appointment.

Can physiotherapy help me avoid surgery?

Sometimes. For several common conditions — including many cases of knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff problems and lower back pain — structured physiotherapy produces outcomes comparable to surgery for many patients. Whether that applies to you is a decision for you and your doctor, informed by an assessment.
