How can physiotherapy help back pain?
Physiotherapy treats back pain by identifying what is actually driving it, then addressing it through hands-on treatment, targeted exercise and changes to how you load your spine. For most back pain, current evidence supports staying active with guided rehabilitation rather than resting — and the majority of cases improve without surgery or scans.
Back pain and the Dubai desk worker
If you work long hours at a desk in Business Bay or Downtown, your back pain is one of the most common conditions we see. Prolonged sitting, low overall movement and high stress all load the spine and reduce the conditioning that protects it. The fix is rarely a single adjustment — it is a combination of movement, targeted strengthening and practical changes to how you work.
What treatment may include
- Detailed assessment to identify contributing factors and rule out anything serious
- Manual therapy for pain relief and mobility
- Graded exercise targeting the specific weaknesses found in your assessment
- Education on posture, load and movement
- Dry needling where clinically appropriate
- A return-to-work and return-to-activity plan
When to seek urgent medical care
Seek immediate medical attention — not a physiotherapy booking — if back pain comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, progressive weakness in the legs, fever, or follows a significant injury.
Frequently asked questions
How long does back pain take to improve?
Many acute episodes improve substantially within a few weeks; long-standing pain takes longer and improves gradually. Your physiotherapist gives a realistic estimate after assessing you.
Do I need an MRI?
Usually not. Scans often show age-related changes in people with no pain at all, and imaging is only indicated for specific clinical concerns.
Should I rest or stay active?
Current evidence favours staying as active as your pain allows. Prolonged bed rest tends to slow recovery.
Is back pain caused by a slipped disc?
Rarely, in the way people imagine — discs do not slip. Disc changes are one possible contributor among several, and most back pain is not attributable to a single structure.
