Home Physiotherapy in Dubai

Some patients are best treated where they live. After a knee replacement, a stroke or a long hospital stay, the trip to a clinic can use up the energy that should go into the session itself. And the things people most need to relearn, such as getting out of bed, using the bathroom and climbing their own stairs, happen at home.

Philanx Pain & Neurorehab sends physiotherapists to homes across Dubai. Each visit includes assessment and hands-on treatment, plus exercise practice in the rooms the patient actually uses, and every patient is left with a written programme to follow between visits.

Who home physiotherapy is for

Home visits suit anyone for whom travel is difficult, tiring or unsafe, and anyone whose goals are about managing daily life at home.

After joint replacement or orthopaedic surgery
Early walking, bending the new knee or moving the new hip within the surgeon's precautions, stairs, and getting in and out of bed and the car
After a stroke or with a neurological condition
Walking, balance, arm and hand function, transfers, and practising everyday tasks such as dressing and making a drink
Older adults with falls, weakness or poor balance
Leg strength, balance training, safe use of a walking aid, getting up from the floor, and checking the home for fall risks
After a hospital stay or serious illness
Rebuilding strength and stamina, starting with short, frequent activity and increasing it week by week
Severe back or neck pain
Pain relief, positions that ease symptoms, and gentle movement for patients who cannot drive or sit through a car journey
Children with cerebral palsy or developmental conditions
Play-based sessions in a familiar setting, with parents learning how to build practice into daily routines
Wheelchair users and people who are mostly bed-bound
Positioning, transfers, seating, chest and circulation exercises, and keeping joints moving

Home or clinic: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. For some patients home is the right place to start, and the clinic becomes the better choice as they get stronger. We will recommend one or the other at the first assessment and tell you why.

Patients can also combine the two: home visits while travel is hard, then clinic sessions once they can get to Business Bay without difficulty.

What a home visit looks like

  1. BookingWhen you book, we ask about the condition, any recent surgery or hospital stay, and your address. Tell us about building access and visitor parking so the physiotherapist arrives on time.
  2. AssessmentThe first visit starts with a full assessment: medical history, current medications, pain, strength, joint movement, balance, and how the person moves around the home. If they have had surgery, we follow the surgeon's instructions.
  3. GoalsWe agree specific goals with the patient and family, such as walking to the lift unaided, showering safely, or managing a full flight of stairs.
  4. TreatmentSessions combine hands-on treatment where it helps with active exercise and practice of real tasks in the home. Difficulty is increased as the patient improves.
  5. Home programmeThe patient is left with a short written exercise programme. With their agreement, we show family members or a live-in helper how to support it safely.
  6. ReviewWe repeat key measurements regularly and adjust the plan. With your consent, we can share progress with your surgeon or doctor.

Making the home safer

Because we see the home, we can spot problems a clinic visit would miss: a loose rug in the hallway, a bed too low to stand up from, a dark route to the bathroom at night, or a shower with nothing to hold on to. Where it would help, we suggest practical changes such as grab rails, a shower chair, a raised toilet seat, night lights, or moving often-used items to waist height.

How to prepare for the first visit

  • Clear a space about two metres long for walking and exercise practice
  • Have a sturdy chair without wheels available, ideally one with armrests
  • Ask the patient to wear comfortable clothes that allow movement, and their usual shoes
  • Keep surgery or hospital reports, the medication list, and any walking aids or braces ready
  • If the patient has difficulty explaining their history, ask a family member to be present

Frequently asked questions

Is home physiotherapy as effective as treatment at a clinic?

For many problems, yes, because most physiotherapy is exercise and practice, which can be done at home. For goals about daily life at home, it is often the more direct route. Where a patient needs equipment that only the clinic has, we will tell you and plan the switch.

How soon after surgery can home physiotherapy start?

Usually as soon as the patient is home from hospital, following the instructions from the surgeon or the hospital physiotherapist. Bring the discharge summary to the first visit so we can follow the same precautions.

Do I need to buy any equipment?

Not for the first visit. The physiotherapist brings what the session needs. If equipment such as a walking frame, shower chair or resistance bands would help long term, we will explain what to get and why.

Which areas of Dubai do you cover?

We visit homes across Dubai. Tell us your area when you book and we will confirm the visit time.

Can a family member or helper be present during the session?

Yes, and it often helps. A family member or helper who learns the exercises can support the patient between visits. For children, a parent or guardian should be present.

Is home physiotherapy covered by insurance?

It depends on the policy. Some plans cover home visits only with a doctor's referral, and some exclude them, so check with your insurer before booking. Our team can tell you what documents to bring.
