What is sports physiotherapy?

Sports physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of injuries related to sport and physical activity. Beyond treating the injury itself, it addresses why it happened, rebuilds strength and movement to the demands of your sport, and guides a structured return to play that reduces re-injury risk. As a dedicated sports injury clinic in Dubai, Philanx supports athletes at every level.

Injuries we treat

  • Muscle strains and tears
  • Ligament injuries including ACL and ankle sprains
  • Tendinopathies including Achilles and tennis elbow
  • Shoulder instability and rotator cuff injuries
  • Runner’s knee and patellofemoral pain
  • Groin, hip and overuse injuries
  • Post-operative sports surgery rehabilitation

How sports physiotherapy helps

Acute injury management establishes what is injured and how badly, and starts appropriate loading rather than unnecessary rest. Progressive rehabilitation rebuilds strength, control and tissue tolerance — the phase most often cut short, and the most common reason injuries recur. Return-to-sport testing uses objective criteria rather than a calendar date. Injury prevention addresses the movement patterns and load errors that caused the problem.

Training and competing in Dubai

Dubai presents specific demands: extreme summer heat, an indoor training season, year-round road cycling and running, and a large population returning to sport after years away. Heat, sudden load spikes at the start of the cooler season, and hard-surface running are recurring contributors to the injuries we see. Rehabilitation here has to account for how and when you actually train.

Why choose Philanx

Dr. Philans Cosmos Ankrah has worked in elite sports rehabilitation, including as the first physiotherapist for the Rugby League Federation Ghana and as head of medical teams at international competitions. He also holds a COMT (Certified Orthopaedic Manual Therapist) qualification. That experience shapes how we approach return-to-play decisions — with objective criteria rather than optimism.

Frequently asked questions

How long before I can return to sport?

It depends entirely on the tissue involved and the demands of your sport. A minor muscle strain may take two to three weeks; an ACL reconstruction is typically a nine-to-twelve month rehabilitation. We give you a criteria-based pathway rather than a fixed date.

Should I rest or keep moving after an injury?

Complete rest is rarely the right answer beyond the first day or two. Controlled, appropriate loading generally supports healing better than immobilisation. What counts as appropriate depends on the injury, which is why early assessment matters.

Do I need a scan?

Most sports injuries are diagnosed clinically and do not need imaging. Scans are useful when the findings would change management, or when a serious injury is suspected. We will refer you for imaging or to a sports physician if it is warranted.
