What is neurological rehabilitation?

Neurological rehabilitation is physiotherapy for conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. It works to restore movement control, balance, coordination and functional independence through structured, goal-oriented therapy — retraining the nervous system rather than only treating the affected limb. As a specialist neuro rehabilitation centre in Dubai, Philanx provides this care at our Business Bay clinic and in patients’ homes across the city.

Conditions we work with

  • Stroke and its long-term effects
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Peripheral nerve injuries
  • Balance and vestibular disorders
  • Post-neurosurgical rehabilitation

How neurological physiotherapy helps

The nervous system retains a capacity to reorganise and adapt after injury — a property known as neuroplasticity. Rehabilitation works with that capacity through repeated, task-specific practice: not generic exercise, but structured repetition of the movements that matter for daily life. Progress is usually gradual and rarely linear, and realistic goal-setting is part of the treatment.

What treatment may include

  • Task-specific training — repeated practice of functional movements such as standing, transferring, walking or reaching.
  • Gait and mobility retraining — restoring walking pattern, endurance and safety.
  • Balance and falls prevention — postural control and reaction training.
  • Strength and range-of-motion work — addressing weakness, stiffness and contracture risk.
  • Spasticity management — positioning and movement strategies, coordinated with your medical team.
  • Caregiver training — practical instruction for family on safe transfers, positioning and home exercise.

Why choose Philanx for neurological rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation is a core specialism at Philanx, not a line on a service list. Our founder, Dr. Philans Cosmos Ankrah, holds a Master’s-level specialisation in neurorehabilitation alongside a Doctor of Physical Therapy, and is a trained robotic neurorehabilitation practitioner. We also offer neurological rehabilitation at home, which matters most in the early stages of recovery.

Frequently asked questions

How soon after a stroke should rehabilitation start?

Rehabilitation generally begins in hospital once a patient is medically stable, and outpatient physiotherapy usually continues immediately after discharge. Earlier structured rehabilitation is generally associated with better outcomes, but the right timing for any individual is a decision for the treating medical team.

How long does neurological rehabilitation take?

Months rather than weeks, in most cases, with a trajectory that varies widely depending on the condition, severity and stage. We reassess at agreed intervals and adjust goals accordingly.

Can it help if my recovery has plateaued?

A plateau often means the current programme has stopped challenging the system rather than that recovery has ended. A fresh assessment sometimes identifies new goals. We will tell you honestly if we do not think further therapy will help.

Do you provide neurological rehabilitation at home in Dubai?

Yes. Home-based neurological rehabilitation is available across Dubai, and is often ideal in the early stages of recovery.
